'Kelly Murphy kicks ass!' Chief John Korzelius, Sleepy Hollow Fire Department
Congratulations to Kelly Murphy who on Saturday 20th of October at the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department Annual Inspection Dinner, was presented with the ‘Above and Beyond Award’ by Chief John Korzelius. The award was in recognition of Kelly's heroic action on Thursday, September 13. Chief Korzelius aboard Sleepy Hollow Fire Department Marine 7 called Tarrytown Fire Department Marine 5 for medical assistance for the victim they had just recovered from the Hudson. Kelly swam from Marine 5 and climbed aboard Marine 7. Finding Marine 7 had no CPR shields onboard, Kelly immediately improvised a CPR shield by using 4"x4" gauze pads. Kelly then checked the airway and administered CPR.

Thanks to the Principles, Teachers and Assistants that extended a welcome to the Tarrytown Fire Department. Institutions visited as part of this year program were John Paulding School, Tappan Hill School, Transfiguration School, New Beginnings Nursery School, Children’s Garden Nursery School, Tarrytown Nursery School, and Nursery School at the Jewish Community Center, Elizabeth Mascia Day Care Center, and the Day Care at the Neighborhood House. A total of three schools, four nursery schools and two day care centers, with and average of ten Firefighters per event. Students were shown smoke detectors, listened to the shrill alarms tone, and responded with what they would do in the event of an alarm in their home. Some students even demonstrated Stop, Drop and Roll to their classmates.
Our hope is that our discussions and demonstrations improved the awareness of all those who attended and that additional smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms were purchased and batteries replaced on exiting alarms. Remember have a plan and practice it.
If you would like to include your institution in next years program please contact 2nd Assistant Chief Mike Coffey, Jr. Please note that although many pictures were taken at the various locations, they cannot be put on the web for public display until the required permission slips have been signed by their parents and returned to the school.
