John "Jack" Nagle joined Hope Hose in 1961.
He rose through the ranks of the Hope Hose Company officers and in 1972
was elected Second Assistant Chief of the Department. In 1973 he was
elected First Assistant Chief and in 1974 Chief of the Department.
Jack was considered by many to be a top notch fearless firefighter
and a "no back down" aggressive nozzle man. At many of the "workers"
during his era, including the Nigerian Embassy, Greenbaums and Russell
& Lawrie I & II he was always on the front line. Those
that were fortunate enough to back Jack up at any fire ultimately gained
knowledge and confidence through this experience.
Another aspect of Jack was his ability to analyze a situation,
whether it be firematic, administrative or political. His sound
judgement allowed him to determine the appropriate steps to take. He
was innovative and always looking for ways to move the Department
forward. In 1974 Jack was one of the key players in developing our minor alarm
system which is still in use today.
When Jack moved out of town he certainly left a void. However,
those that knew him and worked side-by-side with him gained an
everlasting experience of how to conduct yourself as a firefighter,
officer and chief.
